Whatton
St John of Beverley

Churchyard

The churchyard surrounds the church on all sides with a number of mature trees, again to be found all around. It is divided into three areas. The major part is on the south side of the church. Part of this – now forming the second part – has been used for cremated remains. The third part is a strip abutting the main area to the west and has formed an extension used since the 1950s.

The churchyard possesses a number of good eighteenth century Swithland slate gravestones.

In 1302 the parishioners had to pay 40s to reconcile the churchyard after pollution. Until 1892 Aslockton shared the churchyard with Whatton and in 1908 several large lime trees and yews were removed and replaced by pink thorn trees. Registers have been kept from 1538.
