World War I Memorial

St Michael’s and All Angels Church has not one, but three memorials to the men of the parish who did not return from World War I. The more traditional one is a 6ft. wide by 4 ft. high plaque of Red Peterhead granite. The dedication text and the details of the men are engraved and completed with gold leaf. It is set a few feet above ground level, and a focal point for anyone entering the churchyard from the west gate.

The lowest tender for the plaque was £55 10s. from Stewart and Company of Aberdeen. The money was raised by the parishioners through various social activities and collections. The plaque was unveiled on 4 September 1921.

The second memorial is the clock with its four faces set in the tower (this is dealt with separately, likewise the third memorial, the east window).

The inscription on the plaque reads:

World War II Memorial

Below the World War I memorial is a smaller plaque, approximately 3 ft. long and a little over 2 ft. high, in memory of the men of the parish who died in World War II. It is made of brown finished metal set into the wall. The inscription and names are finished in white.
