Stokeham St Peter

Bells

There are two openings in the turret, but only one bell. In his notes on the church Rev T W Swift writes that there were 2 bells in 1556, but it is unknown what happened to the second bell.

In 1552, at the Edward VI inventory, there were two bells, but by 1764 this had decreased to a single bell. The present bell is blank, hung for swing-chiming in the turret, and is a medieval bell dating from c.1325 by an unknown founder. The bell retains a fine set of cable-moulded canons and has a spherical crown.

A new rope was fixed to the church bell so that the parish could participate in the millennium bell-ringing.
