Staunton St Mary

Monuments and Memorials

North Aisle

At the west end of the north wall of the north aisle is a fine monument to Job Staunton Charlton (died 1778); 'over the inscription is a large standing female figure carved in relief and surmounted by a shaped podium with coloured and decorated shield and small carved animal head over.'

The long inscription reads:

SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF JOB STAUNTON CHARLTON ESQR
ELDEST SON OF GILBERT CHARLTON ESQR
AND GRAND SON OF SIR JOB CHARLTON OF LUDFORD IN THE COUNTY OF HEREFORD, BART AND ANNE HIS WIFE
SHE WAS ELDEST DAUGHTER OF HARVEY STAUNTON ESQR WHOSE ANCESTORS INHERITED THE ESTATE HERE
FROM THE TIME OF THE SAXONS IN 1066.
SIR MALGER STAUNTON DEFENDED BELVOIR CASTLE AGAINST WILLIAM THE FIRST DUKE OF NORMANDY,
CALLED WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR, AND HAD THE STRONGEST FORTRESS THEREIN,
EVER SINCE CALLED ( BY HIS NAME ) STAUNTON TOWER.
THE ABOVE JOB STAUNTON CHARLTON, WAS MEMBER FOR THE BOROUGH OF NEWARK, IN SEVERAL PARLIAMENTS
AND DIED IN FEBRUARY 1778, AGED 78 YEARS.
HE MARRIED MARY, THE DAUGHTER OF DANIEL GREENWOOD, M.D. OF NORTHAMPTON, AND WHO DIED IN MARCH 1797.
THEY HAD FOUR DAUGHTERS, ANNE, EMMA, MARY AND ELIZABETH, WHO ALL DIED UNMARRIED;
MARY DIED IN FEBRUARY 1773, ELIZABETH DIED IN OCTOBER 1778, EMMA DIED IN JANUARY 1797,
AND ANNE, THE ELDEST AND LAST SURVIVING DAUGHTER, DIED APRIL THE 11TH 1807,
LEAVING HER STAUNTON ESTATE TO HER SECOND COUSIN ELIZABETH THE DAUGHTER OF JOB BROUGH ESQR
AND WIFE OF THE REVD J. ASHPINSHAW, L.L.D. WHO DIRECTED BY HER LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT
THAT THEY SHOULD AND THEIR ISSUE SHOULD TAKE THE NAME, AND BEAR THE
ARMS OF STAUNTON ONLY; AND WHO OUT OF
GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE TO HER ERECTED THIS MONUMENT.

The circular step of the font is made of part of a floor-stone cross slab. Fragments of the black-letter inscription are still visible and it is assumed to have been the grave cover of Thomas Staunton, son of Radulphus, who died in 1446.

Along the north wall are several damaged medieval effigies. The effigies in the church were disfigured, and two of them completely destroyed, by a Puritan rector in the 17th century in order to make room for his congregation and 'having no regard for gentility and venerable antiquitie paved ye streets with them ...'

The westernmost effigy represents an early 14th century cross-legged knight with intricate chain mail. It has been suggested that he is either Mauger de Staunton or Geoffrey, his son. To the east of this effigy is the badly damaged lower half of a knight.

Effigy of knight dating from c.1300 Fragment of knight effigy

Futher east is a 15th century tomb, topped with the damaged effigy of a lady in a wimple and long flowing gown, with her feet on a lion. There is empty space next to her, presumably intended for another effigy. The base of the tomb is decorated with shields and Tudor roses in cusped panels. The tomb commemorates Joan, the wife of Geoffrey de Staunton, and daughter of John de Lowdham, who died in 1366. The inscription is in Norman French and reads:

Icy git Jone qui fute la femme Mounsier Gefrey de Staunton et la fille Mounsier John de Loudham. Que morust le derayne joure de July, la anne de nostre Seignor Christ mcccxlxvi. X aie mercie de sa alme.
Effigy of Joan de Staunton

In the north-east corner of the aisle is a cross slab to William de Staunton, son of Mauger de Staunton, who died c.1250. Further information on this monument is available in the Archaeology section. The inscription is recorded by Thoroton as reading:

Hic jacet Wilelmus de Staunton, miles, & filius Maugeri de eadem, milities, qui obiit [6] ultimo Maii : cujus animae propitietur Deus. Amen.

Next to the cross slab are two floor stones in memory of Gilbert Charlton (1706) and his wife, Anne (1732). The inscriptions are as follows:

Here
lieth the Body of
ANN Relict of
GILBERT CHARLTON Esqr.
and Daughter of
HARVEY STAUNTON Esqr.
who Died may the 29th 1732
Aged 65

Here

who Departed this life

Against the east wall are two monuments. The first is a slab to Alicia de Loudham, wife of Sir John Loudham and daughter of Robert de Kirkton, who died in 1344. The inscription reads:

Hic jacet domina Alicia de Loudham uxor Johannis de Loudham, militis & filia Roberti de kirkton, militis. Quae obiit septimo Idus Octobris Anno Domini mcccxliv. Cujus animae propitietur. Amen.

The second is an early 14th century knight in sunk relief with a dog at his feet and helmet and shield with two chevrons over his body. The inscription runs around the edge of the slab and identifies the knight as William de Staunton who died in 1326. According to Thoroton it reads:

Hic jacet Wilelmus de Staunton Miles filius Galfridi de eadem militis qui obiit nonis Maii anno domini mcccxxvi. Cujus animae propitietur Deus.
Monument to Alicia de Loudham (1344) Monument to William de Staunton (1326)

On the east wall of the aisle are three monuments. The most northerly is an inset ashlar tablet in memory of Anne Brough, who died in 1732. The inscription reads:

In this Chantry
Lie the remains of Anne the
Wife of Richard Brough
of Thoroton on this County
Esqr and Daughter of
Gilbert Charlton Esqr and
Anne his Wife, she Died 29th
May & was buried in the same
Grave and on the same Day,
with her Mother, June 1st 1732

To the south is a monument with broken segmental podium and coloured decorated shield on the apron to Gilbert and Anne Charlton by James Wallis of Newark:
