Monuments and Memorials

There are very few memorials recorded or extant in St Christopher’s church or its grounds.

A bronze plaque on the south wall of the chancel commemorates the service of the Rev John Taylor, first vicar of the church. It is inscribed:

IN MEMORY OF
THE REV.
JOHN HENRY TAYLOR
UNDER WHOSE CARE THIS
CHURCH WAS BUILT AND
WHICH HE SERVED AS
FIRST VICAR 1910-1932

Mr Taylor had been priest in charge since 1906, and was very active in promoting the need for a new church with its own parish. A small council housing development built on the edge of the vicarage garden also commemorates his service, and his name: Taylor’s Close.

Records indicate that there was a memorial slab at the foot of the west wall of the church, with the inscription:

In loving memory of Sophia Jane Maddison
Died 14th. March 1913
The above window is a token of her love for this church
‘She hath done what she could’

Another record indicates that a tablet existed in memory of William Watson. An employee of Nottingham City Transport, and a lay reader at St Christopher’s 1912-1925. The site of this tablet is not known.

It is assumed that both the above were either destroyed by the 1941 air raid or during the 1952 rebuilding.
