The West Wall

The west wall contains a brass plaque which reads:

To the glory of God and in affectionate remembrance of their
Lt Col Henry Pelham Duke of Newcastle KG.
who died on St. Luke’s day MDCCCLXIV.

These windows and this fresco were given by the officers,
non-commissioned officers and privates of the Sherwood Rangers
Yeomanry Cavalry MDCCCLXV.

This exposes a mystery since as yet no one in the village seems to know anything about a fresco, a painting on wet plaster. Looking at the wall it is hard to imagine that it has been plastered: someone has said that there were painted wooden panels here many years ago.
