St Peter

Churchyard

The churchyard was enlarged in 1844 by adding three roods of land and a new wall was built at a cost of £300. It was again extended in 1869 to include the Church Field covering nearly 4 acres, and is the last resting-place of a number of vicars of St Peter’s. During the 17th and 18th centuries some were buried at Lenton because the vicar of St Peter’s also held the benefice of Lenton.

The Rev Thomas Pickering was interred under a tree in the churchyard. He was the Roman Catholic chaplain at Aspley Old Hall for nearly 50 years and died on 24th March 1789 aged 86 years.

Also interred there is William Elliott, who built Radford Grove, later known as the Folly and endowed the Dole. A memorial stone, which also lists the Trustees, is inside the tower.

In 1953 the arched gateway was rebuilt in honour of the Queen’s coronation.

The last interment took place in 1962. Shortly after, Sir John Anstey then managing director of John Players arranged for the headstones to be removed and placed round the perimeter walls and the ground levelled. The paths were laid out and the gateway on Churchfield Lane was built. The whole project was financed by John Player and Sons.
