Key to Glass

Chancel

1-3.

There are three stained glass windows in the chancel, in memory of the Parkinson and Milward families.

The stained glass is by Wailes (1808-1881) of Newcastle and very characteristic of his work. It was installed in 1862.

White's Nottinghamshire directory of 1864 notes that 'the chancel contains three beautiful windows, the centre one being erected by the Rev and Mrs Audes [Awdes], in memory of the late Mr and Mrs Parkinson of Ley Fields, the other two were erected by Thomas Parkinson, Esq in memory of the late Richard Milward, Esq [1784-1844] and Miss Frances Milward of Hexgreave Park [1857-1875]'.

13.Window to the Leeson and Hitchbone families.

An unusually good example of its date, of the Arts and Crafts school (rather than the Ecclesiological school) in the Crane-Sumner tradition. Depicts the parable of the sower. Designed by Mrs. E.M. Everett, nee Leeson.

Includes the following wording 'whatsoever a man soweth that shall he also reap.'

Dedicated by John Rudd Leeson, 1904.

14.There is an effective Epiphany window at the east end of the north aisle dedicated to the late Mrs Thomas Parkinson, formerly of Hexgreave Park, who died in 1878.

The description was erected before the introduction of the organ in 1905. The window was removed and re-erected in the organ chamber when the organ chamber was built.

The inscription at the bottom reads:

GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO ET IN TERRA PAX HOMINIBUS BONAE VOLUNTATIS

Which translates as 'Glory in the highest to God. And on earth peace to men of good will'.
