Glass

The glass in 1677 is described by Thoroton, who describes armorial glass which is no longer present in the church.

Key to Windows

1The east window is by E R Suffling. it is a three panel painted glass window, depicting the crucifixion, Christ being flanked as usual by the Virgin Mary and St John. An inscription in a scroll towards the bottom of the middle light reads:

IN HONOREM DEI PATRIS LVMINVM ET IN
PIAM MEMORIAM WILLELMI HVLME
LANCASTRIENSIS CVIVS MVNIFICENTIA
ADIVTVS IN COLLEGIO AENEI NASI OXON
BONIS LITTERIS INCVMBEBAT HOC
OPVS VITREATVM ORNANDVM CVRAVIT
THOMAS F COLLINS AM HVIVS
ECCLESIAE RECTOR AS MDCCCCVIII

This makes it clear that the window is in memory of William Hulme of Lancashire and of Brasenose College, Oxford. The window was put in place in 1908 by Thomas F Collins, Rector of the Church. (Thomas Collins is himself commemorated in Window 2.)

2Two windows in the south wall of the chancel were pierced in 1883. They are both single-light windows. The eastern one of the two shows the angel speaking to the women at the tomb of Christ (as does Window 4) with the words:

HE IS NOT HERE HE IS RISEN

At the bottom of the window is an inscription:

TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF
THOMAS FARMER COLLINS   RECTOR OF EPPERSTONE
1891 - 1910                        DIED DEC 17TH 1914

3The other window in the south chancel wall contains in its upper part a depiction of the conception of Christ. The Virgin Mary with a symbol of the descent of the Holy Spirit is surrounded by the words:

Behold the handmaid of the Lord be it unto me according to thy word

A roundel in the lower part of the window shows a scene from the story of Peter’s raising of Dorcas, with a quotation from Acts 10.39:

AND ALL THE WIDOWS STOOD BY WEEPING SHEWING THE COATS
& GARMENTS WHICH DORCAS MADE WHILE SHE WAS WITH THEM

At the bottom of the window is the inscription:

TO THE GLORY OF GOD & IN MEMORY OF FRANCES ANNE WIFE OF THE
REVD M H S CHAMPNEYS SHE DIED JANUARY 12TH 1882 · HER CHILDREN
RISE UP & CALL HER BLESSED HER HUSBAND ALSO & HE PRAISETH HER

(The second part of this inscription is a quotation from Proverbs 31.28)

4South aisle, East window dedicated to William Clarke and his wife. It depicts an angel speaking to the women at the tomb - the same story as shown in Window 2 but in an older style - with the words:

HE IS NOT HERE BUT IS RISEN

The inscription along the bottom reads:

TO THE GLORY OF GOD & IN MEMORY OF WILLIAM CLARKE BORN MARCH 12TH 1784
DIED FEB 18TH 1862 & ANNE REBECCA HIS WIFE BORN MAY 2ND 1801 DIED OCT 4TH 1859

5This window shows Jesus coming to his disciples walking on the water. The inscription reads:

To the Glory of God and in loving memory of Capt Wm Dufty
R N died Dec 27 1847 and his only son Thomas Dufty died
Aug 13 1888 This window was erected by Susan H Dufty 1906

6The middle window in the south wall is filled with plain glass in diamond quarries.

7A two-light window depicting Saint George and Saint Ludmilla. There is a small angel in the tracery panel. An inscription below the figue of St George reads:

To the Glory of God and
in loving memory of
William Lambe Huskinson
who died July 3 1904. This
window is erected by his
widow and 10 sons

8The oldest glass in the church is in the West window. This was given by Henry Houldsworth in 1854.

9Window of plain glass.

10There is a small modern stained-glass window in the new extension.

11A two-panel stained glass window depicting the nativity. It is dedicated:

TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF CHARLOTTE WIFE OF THOMAS BURROWS
AND OF THEIR CHILDREN ~ ALSO OF W H WAGSTAFF (SON-IN-LAW) ERECTED 1908
