Stonework
Description of the Stone
Tower and spire are constructed of grey-brown sandstone probably from the
Carboniferous Millstone Grit. Surprisingly occasional blocks of white oolitic
Portland limestone have been inserted in places.
Thin blocks of greenish grey skerry sandstone have been used on the north
aisle wall. The skerry sandstone was probably quarried locally around Cotgrave
- a thin bed of skerry known as the Hollygate Skerry forms a significant feature
in the area. There is a mixture of Lincolnshire Limestone and Carboniferous
sandstone blocks in the buttresses.
The window mouldings appear to be of fine sandstone with brown ironstone nodules
- probably of Carboniferous age. The eastern end of the Nave is built of ‘modern’
ashlar Carboniferous, Millstone Grit sandstone blocks.
Over the window in the east end of the Nave are grey limestone blocks from
the Lower Jurassic Lias forming a decorative arch.
The south aisle walls are of rough skerry sandstone blocks with a mixture
of Middle Jurassic Lincolnshire Limestone and Carboniferous sandstone blocks
in the buttresses.
