Cinderhill Christ Church

War Memorial

The World War I
Memorial

First World War

A few metres inside the entrance gates in front of the east end of the church stands the Great War memorial. It is in the form of a simple Celtic cross in Darley stone 10ft 9ins high on a base bearing three red granite plaques. The two on the sides have the names of the fallen and the one to the front reads:

THIS MONUMENT
WAS ERECTED BY THE
RESIDENTS OF THE CHAPELRY
OF CINDERHILL IN MEMORY OF
THE MEN WHOSE NAMES ARE
WRITTEN HERE - WHO AT THE CALL
OF DUTY LEFT ALL THAT WAS DEAR
TO THEM AND GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR
THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR
1914 - 1919

On the step below the plaque is recorded:

GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS.
ETERNAL REST GIVE UNTO THEM O LORD.

Three stone steps lead up to the area of the memorial which itself stands on three stone steps. It was made by Jackson Bros, Bulwell.

To the right of the war memorial is a white flagpole approximately 30ft high.
