Bothamsall Our Lady and St Peter

Organ

The organ used at present was originally at Rampton Wesleyan Methodist Chapel some 10 miles from Bothamsall. After the closure of the chapel the pews and organ were purchased for Our Lady & St Peter at a cost of £2000. The church was, during a 15 year period, being renovated in large part thanks to an enthusiastic group of parishioners whose fund-raising made the purchase possible.

The Lady Chapel at the east end of the north aisle was taken away and in 1993 the organ rebuilt in that position, being raised and fixed on a wooden plinth and situated to accommodate access for tuning and maintenance.

Prior to this the commissioned organ builder had stated that:

although there is nothing on the organ to say who built it I am convinced it was built by the Hull organ builders Foster & Andrews between 1865-1875

and added

the organ is a little gem

An organ had been presented in 1864 by the Duke of Newcastle with additional funds provided by public subscription. Oral evidence from a Bothamsall resident suggests that this was not the immediate predecessor to the present organ. That was one given by a local lady some years ago but there is no other known record.
