Rector of Shephall in Hertfordshire.

Having gone thro’ his Academical Studies
With with credit & applause, at ST Catherine-Hall in Cambridge,
He dedicated his Soul to GOD, and his Righteousness
And served him in Spirit & in truth.

Thirty years he fed his Flock of Barton,
His only Flock, with faithfulness & tenderness,
At the same time shewing the Shepherd lov’d his Sheep,
And teaching the Sheep to love the Shepherd.

Tho’ late he entred on his Judicial Charge,
Yet bless’d with a sound & penetrating Mind,
He became well the important Post,
And in the opinion of every wife and good man,
Presided with Ability & Dignity.

But in no part of his Life was he more usefully distinguish’d
Than in the generous Offices of private Friendship.
His prudent Advice & Affectionate Address,
Directed by a candid & open Simplicity of Heart
In most Cases happily prevailed.

Deprived of such a Partner, and Oh! How soon depriv’d!
His tenderly & justly beloved Wife ELIZABETH
Daughter of the Revd MR JOHN WOODS,
Rector of Wilford & Cortlingstock,
As a Monument of his Worth, & a Pledge of her Affection,
